Drawing Animals! Short Programs for Libraries or Evening Events

The Drawing Animals program takes the audience on an illustrated tour of the animals that, author-illustrator, Sheri Amsel has photographed and illustrated in her 25 year career. With the help of her brother, zoo-vet, Dr. Scott Amsel, Sheri has traveled all over the country and photographed every size and shape of animal from elephants to geckos to illustrate for her book projects.
You will meet the animals Sheri had photographed and turned into the illustrations in her book and hear about some of the startling adventures she has had while visiting zoos and preserves with Dr. Amsel. The 30-minute slide show is followed by a drawing session where the audience will learn to draw several wild animals.
The Adirondack Animals and Habitats of the World programs can be adapted as evening programs as well.
Evening and library programs last for 1-hour and cost $300. Programs can include a book sale and signing.

Habitats of the World School Program

The Habitats of the World program show students deserts, grasslands, mountains and rainforests around the world. Students will learn where all their favorite animals live and find out which are in danger of disappearing forever. They will see examples of camouflage, adaptations, nocturnal life, predators and prey, life cycles and food webs in each habitat.
It features illustrations from the Habitats of the World book series by Sheri Amsel (Raintree-Steck Vaugn Press) and special photos of rare and endangered animals from all over the world. It includes photos of a trip down the Amazon River in search of the mysterious Amazon River Dolphin. Students will also get a look at how book illustrations are made from photo reference to book art.
This workshop is designed to enhance understanding of world geography, habitats, plant and animal natural history and how books are made. It is designed to follow curriculum guidelines for K-6.
In School Performances and Classroom Drawing Sessions
Schools receive two 45 minute performances, one for K-2 and one for 3-6. This performance can be followed by several individual classroom visits where each student will illustrate their own habitat poster with a step by step lesson by Ms. Amsel.
Book Signing

The visit includes a Book Sale and Signing offering several of the author’s books at special educational prices. All students receive bookmarks.
The cost for a full day program is $950 plus travel expenses. Several area schools can arrange for week long residencies to split travel costs. Please call to arrange a multi-school residency in your district. In NYS, ask about BOCES Funding.
