Which Animals are Endangered?

There are about 1,880 species listed under the Endangered Species Act. About 1,310 of them are found in United States and its coastal waters. The rest are found in other countries.

Some animals protected under the Endangered Species Act include:

• Whales: blue, fin, humpback, gray, sperm, bowhead, and killer whales
• Sea Turtles: hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, olive Ridley, and green sea turtles
• Fish: Atlantic, Chinook, Coho, sockeye, and chum salmon, catfish, steelhead trout, sturgeon
• Mammals: giant armadillo, aye-aye, wood bison, grizzly bear (in lower 48 states), woodland caribou, cheetah, chimpanzee, chinchilla, elephants, gibbon, gorillas, jaguar, lemur, snow leopard, ocelot, orangutan, giant panda, Florida panther, eastern puma, black rhinoceros, Steller sea lion, mountain tapir, tiger, vicuna, gray wolf, wild yak, mountain zebra
• Reptiles: black caiman, American crocodile, Nile crocodile, Komodo dragon, Indian python, desert tortoise, bog turtle, spotted pond turtle
• Birds: California condor, whooping crane, brown pelican, wood stork, ivory-billed woodpecker
