They are found all over the world.
They live in forests, jungles, swamps, ponds and marshes and anyplace where there is shade, water and warm air.
They have thin bodies with six long, thin legs. They have just one pair of wings (most insects have 2 pairs).
Their wings beat at 500 - 1,000 times per second, which what makes that buzzing sound you hear when a mosquito flies by your ear.
As adults, only the females bite for blood to feed eggs. Males eat flower nectar and plant juices.
Mosquitoes only live for 2 weeks, just long enough to mate and lay eggs. The female lays the eggs in the water. The young hatch into their under water phase (larvae).
